Bread for the World

Brot für die Welt is an agency for ecumenical development cooperation. It was set up in 1959 by the regional Protestant and Free churches in Germany and their diaconal ministries. Organisationally, it is part of Diakonisches Werk der EKD (the Social Service Agency of the Protestant Church in Germany). Brot für die Welt receives private donations and church offerings.

Based on the belief that every human being is created in the image of God and should enjoy equal opportunities, the motto of Brot für die Welt's work is "justice for the poor".

Brot für die Welt does not implement projects, but funds development programmes run worldwide by local churches and partner organisations and advocates jointly with them for the rights of the poor. Its support is aimed at empowering people to improve their living conditions, claim their rights and gain greater control over their lives.

Brot für die Welt's focus areas are food security, combatting climate change, access to basic social services, peaceful conflict resolution and the fight against HIV and AIDS.
