India hit by cyclone
Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Tropical cyclone Laila has hit eastern India with winds up to 119 km/hr hits an area where 4.5 million people live. The weather system is likely to intensify further and move north-northwest up the Andhra Pradesh coast. Indian authorities have begun evacuating people from their homes.
ACT members in the area - including Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action, the Lutheran World Federation and United Evangelical Church of India - are monitoring the situation to decide whether an emergency response will be required. These members were deeply involved in relief operations when heavy rain and floods hit Andhra Pradesh last year.
