Refugees flow into Chad

Thursday, May 06, 2010

More than 100 people have been killed in clashes between the Chadian Forces and the rebel groups at Tissi, near the shared border between Sudan, Central African Republic and Chad. This has resulted in the new arrival of refugees from Central African Republic into Chad. ACT Alliance is now working for the refugees in the Moula camp.

2,600 persons crossed the border recently and are now at Kyabe, 220 kms from Moula, awaiting transfer to Moula.

ACT is represented by its member Lutheran World Federation (LWF), working hand-in-hand with UNHCR for initial assessments. The refugees have been screened and are now transferred to Moula camp .

ACT is in charge of registration, food and non food item distribution, in addition to the operational coordination of the transfer in the field. The new arrivals will replace the number that has left the Moula camp according to a camp census by UNHCR early in the year. ACT and LWF hopes the programmes will meet the need within the current appeal for the humanitarian operations in the area.

The political situation in Central African Republic is still uncertain with the radio announcement to indefinitely postpone the election planned for May 16, 2010 and an intention by the parliament to extend the term of office of the current president.
