Afghanistan

Intense fighting in Afghanistan, the effects of climate change, and weak governance threaten to push even more Afghans into the ranks of the desperately poor.  Natural disasters such as earthquakes worsen the situation for many people. After the last major earthquake, in April 2009, ACT provided food packages, kitchen sets, tarpaulins and blankets, as well as emergency medical services in Sherzad district for 300 families. Over the years, periods of severe drought and severe cold have resulted in ACT issuing appeals for food assistance, programmes to increase sustainable food production, improved irrigation systems, and clean water and heating materials.
