In response to the devastating May 2008 earthquake in central China, ACT issued a $1.48 million preliminary appeal to assist close to 8000 families. The magnitude 7.8 quake resulted in at least 19,500 dead and 102,100 injured. Immense damage to infrastructure was recorded, with an estimated 3.5 million homes destroyed. In some areas, 80 percent of all buildings collapsed. ACT focused assistance in the severely affected provinces of Gansu, Sha’anxi and Sichuan. Food, tarpaulin and quilt distributions were made. Longer-term, rehabilitation included rebuilding homes, schools and health clinics, water and irrigation systems. Flooding and heavy rain in Southern China in July 2009 forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate their homes and killed over 75 people.
