Cyclone Nargis of May 2008, struck a large part of the Delta region in southwest Myanmar killing more than 140,000 people and leaving 2.4 million homeless or forced off arable land. The high number of deaths was partly due to lack of disaster preparedness. ACT issued a $12.3 million appeal to provide assistance following Nargis and provided about 400,000 people with immediate emergency and early recovery assistance such as food, water, shelter, basic household items, and more recently, power tillers and seeds.  ACT members have also been working to prepare communities through ‘cyclone schools’ which teach people to reduce the risks and effects of disasters.
