In Darfur, ACT delivers assistance in conjunction with Caritas Internationalis, together one of the largest humanitarian programmes in South and West Darfur with approximately 350,000 beneficiaries. This programme is recognised by the UN and other observers as an important element in the international relief programme. Initiated in 2004, it has matured into a humanitarian organisation that in 2009 directly supported 300,000 people. Over the past six years the $81 million programme has built health facilities, water and sanitation facilities, income generation activities, vocational training and has built schools. In 2009 the programme picked up critical water and sanitation activities, filling life saving gaps following a directive to expel or close 16 NGOs. In South Sudan, 10 ACT members are responding to the needs of people displaced by fighting with shelter and other relief items.
