Sri Lanka

Around 265,000 people were displaced early 2009 and thousands killed as the Sri Lanka government ousted the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and declared its rule of the entire island on May 18, 2009. Between April 1 and September 28, 2009, a quarter of a million people were forced to into inadequate temporary camps. The ACT response to people in camps in Vavuniya, Mannar and Jaffna included food and nutrition, water and sanitation, and non-food and hygiene items. ACT members provided considerable support to the rebuilding of coastal areas following the 2004 tsunami.
